The evening before his Bar Mitzvah at the Kotel, Alex and his family visited the Afikim branch in Jerusalem and met with the sixth grade children.
The Afikim children were surprised to hear that Alex's school has no walls. In an impromptu discussion, the Afikim children and the Kalb family discussed the merits of schools with no walls, differences between Israeli schools and American schools, best places in Israel to visit and more. Alex also surprised the children with a large bag filled with school supplies that were donated by his friends back in New York. Daniel, the director of the Jerusalem Afikim branch handed Alex a certificate in honor of his Bar Mitzvah and in recognition of his efforts on behalf of Israel's disadvantaged children. |
